In this video I take a looked at Iroshizuku Tsuyu-kusa in a variety of pens and nib sizes.
*Note* This ink has been discontinued but I think the standard Pilot blue ink would be a suitable substitute. I'll test Pilot Blue in the next review to make sure.

Iroshizuku Ku Jaku and Fountain Pens
Thanks for this. I love Schmidt nibs but recently had two EFs that aren’t writing well. Watching your patience in slowly trying different things is really helpful. I found the 7 strokes trick a couple of days ago and I’ve been trying this with one of them (sent the other back). Will persevere on. Like you say it’s also a balance of not making it too wet either. I have tried to mix my ink a little too with something a bit wetter so hoping that might help.
Such a helpful video on so many levels thank you. I’m finding a bottle of this really dry with a Schmidt and Jowo #5 nib both EFs - both dry nibs so lots of friction with the WMB. I’ve been looking for an alternative and whilst I love the saturation of Oxford Blue, find it a bit dark so will see if I can try the deatrementis or another Diamine.
I suggest adding Noodler’s X-feather Blue. In my opinion it is the best waterproof blue ink, a gorgeous deep blue that is well-behaved on paper and in pens.
I appreciate this video, thanks. For the blues, I like the behavior of Noodler’s X-feather Blue even better than the X-feather Black. Plus, it’s a gorgeous deep blue, a lovely color. Absolutely waterproof. For a water-soluble dark true blue in a well-behaved ink, my go-to is Diamine Oxford Blue. It’s lovely and deep, smooth and sharp, even in extra fine nibs. A lot of blue inks either misbehave or wimp out in extra fine nibs.
Very much appreciate the structure/thoroughness of your reviews. Good to see you at the St. Louis pen show!!
Thanks Michael! It was nice to meet you in person. 😀
the first ink I bought was Diamine china blue which is quite a light, unsaturated ink but I seem to prefer much more saturated blues like Diamine oxford and midnight blue; don’t use tsuyu kusa in your vintage Esterbrook fp’s: Iroshizuku inks are slightly alkaline and will eat thro’ the latex sac!; thanks for this:)
You're welcome, Angus! I like Oxford Blue, too. Thanks for the heads up about Iroshizuku inks. I had heard that before, so I reserve my little collection of Iroshizuku inks for my modern pens, usually the dryer writing ones. When I started getting into lever filling pens, I bought a bottle of Waterman Mysterious Blue. It's the only ink I use in my vintage pens. 😀
@@gadgetstop321 mysterious blue is wonderful as is serenity blue(tbh, haven’t come across a Waterman ink I didn’t like except turquoise: not a fan of that at all:)
Thank you for this review. Very thorough and informative.
Thank you - you are so very thorough!!! ✨
You're welcome! This is my version of playing around and relaxing with my pens and ink. 😀
Can we get more Gina?!
Absolutely! She really enjoyed this. 😀
It was lovely meeting you! I’m happy Gail introduced us. I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed the organization of the show 👏🏼💙 We are a small group of people, but we are passionate!
I'm glad I was able to meet you too, Charis! This was such an enjoyable weekend that my sister and I are even more committed to making this an annual event. Being able to spend time with other pen enthusiasts who share your same passion is a real treat. 😀
Sorry but that knife is pathetic
It's not for everyone. That's why there are so many different knives out there and new knives being designed every day. Everyone has their own taste.
8:35 TOTALLY AGREE!! 😂😂😂 Your take on pilot pen too.
Thank you! Pilot is still my favorite fountain pen brand. 😀
Agreed
My first Pen Show was in Dallas last year, and it was overwhelming and busy. Hopefully this year I will have my game on. I kind of lost touch with you over the months. I just got in to this hobby March 2023. It seems there have been alot of You Tubers coming out of the woodwork. Hard to keep track of all of the followers I keep an interest in. Congrats on you & your sister's Sailor purchases.
Thank you! For the first half of this year I didn't make or watch much fountain pen content - just spent my time enjoying the pens and ink in my collection. However, in the month leading up to the show I did start watching more fountain pen reviews and tried to get an idea of what I'd like to look for at the show. I didn't get any of the pens that I had planned to look for, but I don't feel like my planning was a waste. I was able to weigh the pros and cons of those pens with pens that randomly caught my eye at the show and was able to come away with some pens and ink that I'm extremely happy with. It was nice to hear from you again, and I hope you have a wonderful experience at the Dallas Pen Show in a few months. 😀
@@gadgetstop321 Thanks Cathy! I appreciate it. Your pens that you were selling were very nice. I have been looking for a Stargazer. And I saw this video too late
@@tbayless8324 I recommend keeping an eye on eBay for a Stargazer (or a Stella). They show up from time to time for a reasonable price.

Yes, ma'am, you just got one more subscriber. Greetings from Brazil!!
That's great, thank you! 😀
What fun to hear about your time at the St Louis Pen Show. I was in St Louis 20-23 June for the Association of Professional Chaplains annual conference. If that was when the pen show was happening, it is well that I didn't know -- the temptation would have been overwhelming. ... Oh! It was! It was. Best not to have known. Rats. Sorry not to have the chance to meet you at your table.
Maybe you'll get another chance in the future. My sister and I would like to make this an annual thing. We're also making plans to be at the Arkansas Pen Show in Little Rock.
Victorinox knives are the best. Especially their 6” boning knife. This knife looks great.
Thank you! I'm enjoying it. 😀
watching this in 2024 Thanks for the video and tips
You're welcome! This is a well made notebook. I used it for years and just sold it a week ago. It was still in really good shape.
I'm so glad you had a great time. Going to the St. Louis Pen Show is a dream of mine, but I have yet to manage it. Maybe 2025 will be my year. You've inspired me to try hard to make it work.
Thank you, Marilyn! Circumstances prevented Gina and I from attending the Pen Show until this year, but we've decided it's worth making our plans around it from now on. 😀
Pro Gears for $139? I wonder if they'll have the same deal here at the San Francisco Pen Show in August...
I hope you guys get the same deal. I'm so glad I got a Pro Gear. That 21k nib is nice!
Funny kitchen knife
That it is! 😉
I’m happy to see you back. I was hoping you would be giving an update on your pen show experience.
Thank you, Peggy! It was so much fun. 😀
It sounds like you had a wonderful time. My first pen show was the DC show last year and it was definitely overwhelming, but I loved it. I hope to go to a different show this year to be able to compare the experience.
I've heard that the DC Pen Show is much larger than the one in St. Louis...I can't even imagine! But I've also heard that the St. Louis Pen Show is growing, so that's good news.
It was so fun meeting you both. I agree that meeting and talking with the people is the best part of it. I also feel very content about my purchases and just have a few minor regrets…like I didn’t sample any inks this time or check those out as thoroughly as I wanted, but overall had a wonderful time. When is the Arkansas pen show? Would that one actually be closer for you?
Thanks, Gail! I'm already looking forward to next year. The Arkansas Pen Show is in March. It's about the same distance from us as St. Louis, just in the opposite direction. Next time I'd like to visit more vendors and participate in a workshop. I don't feel like I missed out on anything this time though. The weekend was so full! 😀
@@gadgetstop321 Hi! I really enjoyed this video. I live in SE Kansas, and I wondered if you and your sister might live in Missouri? I have placed several Ink and paper orders from Vaness in Little Rock, AR. I've been wanting to meet the staff there. I think they do a fantastic job, and I really enjoy the variety of fountain pen goodness they offer. Little Rock would be closer for me than St. Louis. Please let me know! Thanks so much! Lisa

@@craft-o-matic399 Thank you! My sister and I have visited the Vanness Pen Shop twice and it was wonderful. We're planning on going to the Arkansas Pen Show in Little Rock next March and if possible have a table there. 😀
Hey Cathy! I'm just happy that you're back to posting videos again 😊
It's great to be back! The pen show reinvigorated me. 😀
I just use the plastic sheet fro the window of junkmail envelopes.
That's a good idea! 😀
Nice to meet you Gina 😊 I enjoyed hanging out with you two and hearing about the show.
She enjoyed it too! We're going to try to do more videos like this. Maybe she'll let us explore her collection. 😀
I loved it the pen show. I think we do need to take a look at my collection too.
@@ginachaplain8058 I'll be glad to see it 🖋️😊
I got that Christmas spiced tea pro gear recently, also! The finial has actually grown on me a bit. But I agree with you that it's weird.
I was writing with mine this morning and was thinking the same thing. The finial gives it that Sailor touch. 😀
Wow, the Sailir deal is so good!
I know! When my sister told me about it, I thought she must be mistaken, but when I saw it for myself I snapped one up. 😀
@@gadgetstop321that deal would have been worth the 7 hr drive there had I known as I’ve wanted the Brown line pen for some time
so glad you got the Sailor pro gear: both of mine are EF’s and they’re probably my two favourite pens:); you should definitely get a Montblanc 146: mine’s a F which writes too fat for my liking but think your writing might be slightly larger than mine:) - the 146 is just a very comfortable writer:)
I really like the softness of the Pro Gear nib. I'm definitely glad I got that pen. You're really selling me on the Montblanc 146. How would classify the line width of the fine compared to Japanese nibs?
@@gadgetstop321 much broader: a Montblanc F is like a Japanese B!:)
Wow!
Very Kewl! Thanks!
Thank yew! 😀
that is a seriously good looking pen: it looks about the same size as a Pilot prera: is that it’s actual size?:) - please post more: we miss you(retiring is no excuse, fellow maths teacher:)
Yes, it's the same size as the Prera. I took it to the Pen Show last weekend and a couple people were seriously looking at it, but they ended up buying similar sized pens with medium nibs (my red Custom 98 and my Blue Stargazer). I'm glad this pen didn't sell because it has my favorite nib out of all these little pens. Also, I'm about to start making ink reviews again. Several people at the pen show said they found them helpful, so that was encouraging. 😀
Господа, даже швейцарский оригинальный нож сначала надо грамотно заточить. Больно было смотреть как автор вначале вскрывал посылку. Дальше ролик не смотрел
I apologize. I thought it would be "cute" to open my new Victorinox Venture with my 30 year old Swiss army knife. I didn't realize until it was too late that the little knife needed to be sharpened.
Where can I buy this Bible ??
I can see that they are available on christianbook.com and Amazon.com
All that hard plastic is not something i would like. And i prefer a silent knife...no clicks or rattles. Victorinox makes great pocket knives. Very well build and good materials. Mine lost the scales years ago but the knife itself is still fine. Also lost the toothpick. But when it comes to outdoor stuff. This knife doesnt give me any reason to think that V is experienced in bushcraft. And survival kits like this with all the extra stuff makes me suspicious. Looks like marketing rather than anything else
Their marketing did snag me, but fortunately I'm very happy with it. 😀
хуитаизподногтей
Caveat emptor {"let the buyer beware."} It is just a hyped-up Kitchen knife and there are many better bushcraft knives out there. I am a Swiss Army Knife Aficionado with 250 SAK's and 50 Wenger / Swiss Buck Wengers . I have Bowie knives, various Bucks and the 111mm Victorinox outrider and 130mm Victorinox RangerGrip 79 as bushcraft and camping knives as well as several actual purpose built Victorinox Kitchen knives. Felix is a SAK Maestro but the Venture series are simply hyped-up Kitchen knives
That works out ok for me because I do enjoy using it in the kitchen. 😀
👍
😀
I’m not going to lie. Not the first time I saw this video.. I want one
They are appealing. 😀
Fair enough in an thg shit scenairo you could chop wood, but for me your just going to have a dull or broken knife fast. More importantly consumed calories you may not be able to replace... small Axe or silky saw and look for smaller twigs etc. Pick dry stick if possible, pine or softwood is easier to feather! Hardwood great for burning or handles. The grey matter in a shgth scenairo is your best tool so use that even more. Keep it up , this had me sweating watching but your learning now rather then whe your life depends on it...metal pencil sharpener on twigs can make shavings too!
The designer of the knife said he didn't intend for it to be a survival knife. He's into bushcraft, which I guess is more of a hobby, but you've given me some good advice. Thanks! 😀
Beauty knife
Thank you! 😀
Did you take a look at this page after one year? You must post your review on how this ink fades. You might find an almost blank paper after one or 2 years.
I did go back and check it and it had not faded, however, my writing samples are kept in a notebook and are rarely exposed to light.
The quest for the perfect black ink is like the hunt for the perfect little black dress. You know darn well that the classics are best.
Well said! 😀
Nice description, i got what i wanted to know
Thank you! I'm glad I could help. 😀
Интерестно. Сколько он стоит? Так чисто сравнить!
Been using 2 fountain pens for years, but just recently really dove into the hobby deeply. I really like how you do your ink reviews, with all the nib variety. I’ll be at the show Friday - I’ll say hi!
Thank you! I look forward to seeing you at the show. 😀
I just got this ink today and filled my Pilot Kakuno <m> demonstrator and it is smooth as silk. Plenty wet but not gushing.
It's one of my all time favorites. In fact, it is my favorite purple. 💜
Yo, have y'all found any converters that might be able to fit in that pen? I really want to try out my Noodler's ink with this pen! Also, if you think that the ink feels overly dry or scratchy, you might want to clean the nib before you use it.
I haven't really looked for a compatible converter. I just refilled the cartridge. 😀
@@gadgetstop321 Ok! Thank for the idea through!
So interesting how the different combinations work out. I thought 143 was gonna be my pale blue, but I think I'll keep looking around.
Great voice. I love the technical jargon: "rubber grippy thing."
I like to be precise. 😂
Did you say Kaweco inks are water-resistant? I just bought my first Kaweco pens - a Sport and a Lilliput. I should receive them in a day or two.
Kaweco Palm Green and Summer Purple have a water resistant component - If you dip a writing sample in water, the color will lift away leaving a very legible layer of charcoal grey. The Kaweco brown and orange inks don't have the water resistant component, and I'm not sure about any of the other colors.
Thanks for clarifying and for this video.
